Lighting Jesse Hall Dome

Mizzou’s iconic Jesse Hall is the main administration building and one of the major symbols of the university.  Located at the south end of Francis Quadrangle, Jesse Hall’s dome stands nine stories above the ground and is taller than the building on which it is affixed.

The Jesse Hall dome was first lit in October 1987 to commemorate the university’s 150th anniversary.

Bright white lights are the standard lighting configuration for the dome. It is lit gold during significant university-wide celebrations, including Homecoming, noteworthy anniversaries, winning a home football game, SEC/Power 5 away game, bowl game or team national championship. Since 1988, the dome has been lit green each March for Engineers week. This is the only variation in the white or gold lighting of the dome.

Lighting Memorial Union

Located at 518 Hitt St., Memorial Union serves as a student gathering place and a memorial to military veterans. It is home to Stotler Lounge, Wrench Auditorium, A.P. Green Chapel, a food court, lounges, meeting spaces and offices. Completed in 1926, the Memorial Union tower was constructed as a tribute to 116 MU students who lost their lives in World War I. When the north portion was completed in 1950, the building was re-dedicated to include World War II veterans. When walking underneath the tower, Tigers tip their hats and speak in a whisper to honor of our fallen soldiers.

From time to time, campus groups have asked to light the Memorial Union tower to commemorate an event or raise awareness of a cause.  Because the location is a memorial structure, events that include lighting the tower must be conducted in a respectful and appropriate manner. Due to the high traffic in the area, in addition to normal permissions, lighting requests must be approved by the Vice Chancellor for Operations to ensure that the technical requirements can be carried out in a manner that ensures the safety of the community.
