Picture of MU Campus

I continue to be in awe of the many projects that MU Operations staff accomplishes, and 2015 was no exception. I’m honored to lead such a talented group of 842 full-time and 74 temporary staff who provide learning opportunities for 385 student staff.

Our focus in the fiscal year was to streamline as many functions as possible throughout the division. Through shared services, we were able to realize greater efficiencies by:

  • Eliminating 38 vacant positions in FY15, and we are on track to eliminate nine more vacancies in FY16.
  • Transitioning IT staff to the Department of Information Technology. Many continue to be embedded in Campus Facilities and serve all MU Operations units except offices in Jesse Hall, Gustin Golf Course and Show-Me State Games.
  • Changing the reporting structure for finance staff throughout the division, who now report directly to Operations Finance unit, under the direction of John Haynes.

Though three long-time directors retired, we were able to promote new leaders from within, who worked closely with their predecessors for a seamless transition. Gregg Coffin is the director of Campus Facilities-Energy Management; Dave Fox leads Show-Me State Games and Doug Schwandt is the MU Police chief. In addition, we welcomed Srivivisan “Raghu” Raghavan as Mizzou’s sustainability manager; and Gerald Morgan was promoted to director of Campus Facilities-Space Planning and Management.

As I meet with Operations staff in open forums, I continue to stress that our purpose is to further the academic mission of Mizzou in everything that we do. We continue to offer research opportunities for faculty and students and find other ways to include as many real-world experiences for students as possible by offering part-time jobs throughout the division.

I hope you enjoy learning about the many services that we perform on campus daily to make Mizzou a beautiful, safe, well maintained environment where students learn, grow and become our world’s future leaders. I welcome your questions or suggestions at wardga@missouri.edu.
